“We have more culture, more media, than we can now consume in a thousand lifetimes — we don’t need any more choice. What we need is help in choosing.”

Richard Nash, in his CNN.com opinion piece about the demise of Borders. This is what I return to, again and again, when thinking about the various stakeholders in the media world at the moment. What are you doing to help me choose what I should read next? If the answer is merely that you’re giving me the choice, that’s not good enough, and actually, it’s detrimental. Seth Godin put it nicely when he said (I’m paraphrasing here) “He who controls the playlist is king.” He was talking about music, but it’s doubly important for books, as a book represents many times over a larger commitment of time and energy than a song does. The next few years are going to be all about how we curate the media we consume. It’s an exciting time, I think. (via thefeeling)
Richard is a prophet. Seriously.
